Kenn Yerian - Mandolin, Guitar & Tin Whistle
The story of Kenneth having been born on the last helicopter out of Saigon has turned out to be untrue. In truth, he was lifted, screaming and fighting, from the dark mud between the roots of an ancient walnut tree in Ohio on a dark October night during a raging storm. As a child, he was known to bang empty tobacco tins rhythmically together while whistling a strange paean-like tune. These were the beginnings of a musical career that would continue for a lifetime. At four years old, he began playing piano, and by age six, he would be singing Johnny Cash, Everley Brothers and Beatles songs to no one in particular as he rode his bicycle. Many other instruments would follow the piano including harmonica, bells, recorder, clarinet, saxophone, bass, guitar, mandolin, ukulele, kazoo, and a multitude of desktop-drumming-inspired percussion. The seminal punk-rock (not punk, but punk-rock) band came and went. The "artist" years came and went, and with his musician buddies all seeming to be participating in the worst kind of eclectic competition, Kenneth turned his attention to nothing but plugging in, cranking up to eleven, and getting down to some serious wood-house shredding! The years followed with rock, reggae, folk, blues, and backing up a bad sax player. Finally, Kenneth went west and brought the coast a dose of home-grown Midwestern fury known as TV Blackout. Rocked from Springtown to San Francisco, TV Blackout's life was like a bottle rocket: swift, badly aimed, and sort of dangerous. Following the blackout came the studio period. Multiple instruments, any style you asked, minimum takes. With pay undelivered, and a headache brought on by the screeching of a hideous banshee, Kenneth headed east before his fingertips and soul were permanently burned. He had escaped Medusa, and gone over the wall. Homeward bound, returning to the shire for a reckoning, the Plan was born and has grown into a bouncing baby Cara Sean.
JJ Flynn - Guitar & Accordion
JJ was born from the Earth unto the nest of many in the tenth month of the Year of 1967.Born with the thirst and desire never paralleled in his life except for music. First the harmonica at 5 then kids choirs at 7. Started playing guitar at 10 and first real band was a Punk Rock band with Special Ed as a name! Then came College, studying Audio Engineering and Jazz.
On the road to an engineering career he had many detours of musical nature. On the way he has played keyboards, organ, piano, guitar, bass and mandolin. Performing in many styles such as Punk rock, Blues, Jazz, Folk and more. JJ is an accomplished performing and recording musician for more than 25 years. He has a discography as perplexing as his career thus far. Most notable is his last endeavor that was a blues man being folk artist and visa versa, called Beautiful Women Give Me the Blues released in 1998. The momentum lost and the blues band losing power and a detour changes all road signs completely! Hope comes in the form of Erin Julia, his daughter and wife Sharon! Suddenly his focus is reshaped in all aspects including music. Collaborating with Kenn Yerian randomly for over 10 years hatched an idea that evolved into the forming of Cara Sean. This band allows JJ to venture into songs of his Irish heritage and that of his brethren the Scots, in addition to experimenting with the performance and interpretations of the Celtic and Traditional songs. Also encouraging and requiring the use of all of the diverse instruments and styles he has played in the past. But better yet expanding his arsenal with the Accordion and hopefully soon a little fiddle.
Rick Surber- Bass
Rick was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. At the age of 7 Rick moved to Lafayette, Indiana where he started his musical journey at the age of 14 after seeing the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964. At that magical moment he said, "That's the job I want." He became a lead vocalist and rhythm guitar player. Rick played in a number of bands over the next 4 to 5 years and in that time he expanded his musical tastes to folk, rock, blues, jazz, eastern, world and classical.
In 1974 Rick moved to Los Angeles, California and immediately immersed himself in the music scene where he spent most of his time writing and getting to know the local musicians and record company insiders. In 1979 Rick graduated from Sound Masters Recording School where he studied under Brian Ingoldsby President of ABC Recording Studios and one of the grandfathers of modern recording. Rick spent the next several years as a studio and live sound engineer working with the likes of, Robbie Krieger, Hubert Laws, Ronnie Laws, David Sanborn, Steven John Hunter and Natalie Cole to name a few.
In the early eighties Rick returned to performing when he became the lead singer for a band he had been producing. After several shows Rick developed a severe case of Laryngitis that ended his singing career. Feeling like his musical career was over he spent the next several years working as a freelance production manager in commercials and eventually left the business altogether.
Now back in Indiana Rick has returned to his musical roots. Cara Sean is his Muse and he has found a new voice in the bass guitar.
Matty "D" - Drums
Born Matthew Diuro on June 8th 1973 in the New Jersey, Matty D spent the first 24 years of his life in growing up 12 miles outside of New York City, growing up near the city (New York) was "AWESOME"! The culture, environment, attitude, everything was unique. I've lived in 6 states and nothing compares! I'm very grateful I was born and raised there.
At an early age Matty D realized he had a passion for music, As long as I can remember I loved to play or pretend to play music. There are pictures of me when I was very young passed out on the couch Christmas Day with toy drums and guitar next to me. Matty D's father Lou, is an accordion player who also help introduce music to Matty D, I remember my dad playing the theme from the movie "The Godfather" on the accordion and also on the family organ. I credit my dad for teaching me how to play the ONLY song on piano; "When the Saints come marching in". I use to love jamming out on the organ!
It wasn't until Matty D heard a song that would forever change his life, I remember watching MTV and seeing the video "Tom Sawyer" from Rush. The song was intense and seeing how Neil Peart played was all I needed to begin playing drums.
On a cold December day back in 1981, Matty D's dad bought a drum kit, I remember coming home and attempting to set up the kit, I didn't know a damn thing about drums! But I was very eager to learn. Every moment Matty D could find would be spent either playing or just sitting behind the kit. With only 3 drum lessons under his belt, Matty D began his quest to learn to play. Over the years Matty D spent countless hours practicing everyday after school, I drove my parents, brother, and mostly my sister nuts! Especially when practicing the same beat over and over again.
In 2000 a major turning point in Matty D's playing occurred, I was living in Kansas at the time, working a lot and seemed to be in a musical rut. I was being transferred to Kentucky, so I decided to part ways with music for a while and sold my drum set. A decision that would haunt Matty D for the next 7 years.
As the years progressed the urge to play became stronger, Any chance I had to play a drum kit I would. When I played the urge to play again grew with intensity.
Finally in 2007, the 7 year hiatus ended. Ken Yerian approached Matty D with a proposal to join him and JJ Flynn in piecing together a band, I sat in on a practice session with JJ and Ken. They gave me a set of bongos to play. It was during that jam session I realized it was time to play again.
With a strong desire and different approach to play drums, Matty D is eager rise above the plateau and continue to grow musically, Being in Cara Sean allows me the chance to not only play with great experienced musicians, but also the opportunity to expand my drum knowledge to a different level with the variety of arrangements. What the future holds for Matty D we'll wait and see?!
